BSB Fundraiser Helps Distribute over 2,100 Toys for Flood-affected Children in Valencia
On Sunday, 5th January 2025, more than six-hundred children from Massanassa, a town heavily affected by the Valencia floods in October, received over 2,100 toys thanks to the efforts of the Castelldefels-based charity G10. A significant part of the funding for these toys came from the proceeds of fundraising at BSB. The non-uniform day organised on Friday, 15th November in The British School of Barcelona saw students, staff, and families from all campuses (BSB Sitges, BSB City and BSB Castelldefels) come together in solidarity to support those affected by the flooding in Valencia.
Our whole school event aimed to raise awareness of the urgent need for help in the aftermath of the disaster in Valencia and raised €15,000, being the main economic contributor. Combined with other donations, BSB helped G10 achieve the sum of €50,000 to buy and distribute Christmas gifts.
A Powerful Show of Community Spirit
During the Holiday season, a team of a hundred and twelve volunteers from Castelldefels worked tirelessly to buy the toys and distribute them the night before the Three Wise Men Day celebration. The initiative also aimed to contribute to the economic recovery of Massanassa by purchasing the toys from a local shop that had been struggling after the floods.
‘We greatly appreciate the participation of The British School of Barcelona to all the volunteers that made it possible for this magic to reach the homes of the children of Massanassa,’ said Miguel Ángel Serrano, president of the G10 organisation. ‘We took valuable lessons from this experience, but the most important thing has been the excitement and magic reflected in the children’s eyes, the sincere thanks from their parents, and the excited applause from the balconies.’
A Message of Gratitude
Neil Tetley, BSB’s Executive Principle, extended heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the fundraiser. ‘This is a wonderful project which we are delighted to support. I love the fact that it both helps to bring happiness to children in the area affected by the flooding and help the local economy.’
