Eco-Friendly Upgrades for Energy Savings and Sustainability at BSB
At The British School of Barcelona, we remain steadfast in our commitment to environmental responsibility and climate action. We are proud to announce the latest installation of solar panels across all our campuses, including the recent addition at BSB City Foundation Campus and BSB STEM Centre. This initiative strengthens our school’s dedication to combating climate change and enhancing our efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
The deployment of 567 solar panels across our various campuses over the last two years showcases our unwavering promise to address climate change and promote a greener future. Each campus, from Sitges, Castelldefels and Barcelona, now features solar panels that have already begun making a significant impact on the environment. They have led to impressive results, including 120.70 tons of standard carbon savings and a reduction of 143.34 tons of CO2 emissions, equivalent to planting 196 trees. These figures underscore the influence of clean and renewable energy sources in mitigating the adverse effects of climate change.
Here’s a breakdown of the number of solar panels at each of our campuses:
- 260 solar panels at BSB Castelldefels
- 144 solar panels at BSB Sitges
- 36 solar panels at BSB Nexus
- 91 solar panels at BSB City Main Campus
- 18 solar panels at BSB STEM Centre
- 18 solar panels at BSB City Foundation Campus
Eco-friendly school
But our climate commitment extends beyond solar panels. The new BSB City Main Campus, which opened its doors earlier this school year, serves as a testament to our dedication to environmental responsibility. The entire campus has been thoughtfully designed with a focus on acoustic, lighting, and thermal quality criteria. It features state-of-the-art technology, including automatic air renewal, air conditioning, and soundproofing of educational spaces, all aimed at providing a comfortable and sustainable learning environment.
The emphasis on the building’s facade is noteworthy, utilising glass and greenery to maximise natural light and infuse the environment with nature, directly contributing to the comfort and wellbeing of our students.
In addition to tangible energy efficiency and positive effects on the environment, we believe that by taking action, we are setting an example for a culture of environmental awareness, which undoubtedly needs to go hand in hand with education. Therefore, alongside whole-school actions, daily actions led by our students, from the eco-committee to the BSB Green Team, and individual actions, reinforce the invaluable role education plays in nurturing a generation mindful of environmental responsibilities.
Applying for EcoInnovation Awards
Our commitment to sustainability and environmental education at BSB is strong. In this regard, we have recently submitted two Pre-University student projects to the EcoInnovation Awards, promoted by the Endesa Foundation in collaboration with the European Foundation Society and Education.
The first is the valorisation of the outdoor spaces of the BSB STEM Centre, where BSB Nexus students analysed the characteristics of the soil, improved it for agricultural use by natural and ecological methods and started an environmentally and economically sustainable vegetable garden. The students are also responsible for holding sales days for the vegetables they produce, and the profits are reinvested in the project. They also promote sustainability and a greater commitment to the consumption of fresh, seasonal and quality produce by selling seedlings at BSB fairs and events.
The second project is the creation of two outdoor classrooms in the courtyard of the BSB STEM Centre. Here again it is our BSB Nexus students who develop the initiative, from the design and dimensioning phase of the spaces to the actual execution of the project, giving a new life to old pallets, sanding, varnishing and adapting them for use in these future outdoor classrooms.
Over the next term and a half we will be documenting the implementation of both projects and submitting a final report, with the aim of winning one of the €1,000-€4,000 prizes in April to take the projects to the next level.
